Today, we held a Focus Group Discussion on “Identifying Urban Agriculture in Historical Bandung” with Mr. Yudi Hamzah, S.S., M.Pd and Mr. Muhammad Ryzki Wiryawan, S.Ip., M.T.
Bandung has long been conceptualized as a “City of Gardens” (Tuinstad) since ancient times.
During this discussion, we explored various models and concepts of urban agriculture in Bandung from the past, including the Dutch terms “”tuinbow”” and “”tuinstad,”” and diverse depictions of farming practices across different areas in Bandung by Mr. Ryzki Wiryawan. We also heard fascinating childhood stories from Mr. Yudi about his grandmother’s backyard, which featured clove and water apple trees cultivated using traditional “”cebreng”” farming techniques. Through these narratives, we gained deeper insights into the journey of agriculture in Bandung and enriched our understanding of our own backyard gardens.
This discussion aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15, which focuses on organizing events that promote conservation and sustainable land use, including forests. By delving into the history of urban agriculture in Bandung, we aim to preserve and enhance our local ecosystems while learning valuable lessons from our heritage.
We extend our gratitude to Mr. Ryzki Wiryawan and Mr. Yudi Hamzah from @bandungheritage for sharing their knowledge. We look forward to future collaborations that will further enrich our understanding and practices of urban agriculture in Bandung. (SNM)
