Dr. Kevin Muhamad Lukman, a lecturer at Padjadjaran University, demonstrated his active role in regional development issues based on local potential through the publication of a review article entitled “Geographical Indication in Indonesia: A Review on the Spatial Distribution and Classification of Geographical Indication-Registered Products and Related Publications.” Published by a cross-disciplinary team from the Faculty of Psychology, the Faculty of Law, and the Graduate School of Unpad, the article, in collaboration with the University of Tokyo, Japan, maps geographical indication (GI) products in Indonesia in terms of spatial distribution, commodity classification, and a review of related scientific literature.
The study found that the majority of Indonesian GI products are concentrated in Java and Sumatra, with agricultural commodities being the dominant category. The research also demonstrated that local cultural values and traditional knowledge play a significant role in the formation and sustainability of GI products. However, the study highlighted that most scientific publications related to GI in Indonesia are still limited to legal aspects and are mostly written by domestic researchers, with little global reach. This indicates a gap in the promotion, development of economic benefits, and long-term sustainability of GI products.
Contribution to the SDGs:
This research directly supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by underscoring the importance of GIs as a tool for protecting local commodities with high economic value. Furthermore, GI products based on traditional practices and local resources contribute to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. This study also supports SDG 9: Innovation and Infrastructure by recommending the expansion of multidisciplinary research and strategic mapping to strengthen national policies related to GIs.
This study serves as an important reference for developing policies for protecting local products based on territory and traditional wisdom, while strengthening Indonesia’s position in the global geographical indication system.
