Bandung, The Graduate School of Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), through its community service program (PPM), has initiated a strategic activity titled “Fish Processing for Competitive Local Products”, led by Dr. Emma Rochima. This program aims to strengthen the capacity of coastal communities by enhancing the value of local fishery products through sustainable and innovative processing techniques.
Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), the initiative promotes responsible and low-waste utilization of marine resources, helping to reduce pressure on overfished stocks while maximizing the economic value of existing catches. Participants—comprising local fishermen, small-scale processors, and youth—were introduced to practical methods of fish preservation, hygienic processing, and packaging that adhere to food safety and environmental standards.
Beyond technical training, the program also raised awareness on the importance of protecting marine biodiversity and preventing pollution caused by discarded fish waste or plastic-based packaging. By integrating sustainability principles into local fisheries, the activity supports both ecological conservation and the long-term viability of marine-based livelihoods. Through this initiative, UNPAD reinforces its commitment to fostering blue economy solutions that empower communities while preserving the health of Indonesia’s aquatic ecosystems.
