Unpad Research Highlights Green Transition via Electric Vehicles to Boost Energy Security and Cut Emissions in Indonesia

Researchers from the Graduate School, Universitas Padjadjaran, notably Glenn Jolodoro and Dr. Susanti Withaningsih, have published a comprehensive sustainability assessment—“A Sustainability Assessment of Electric Vehicles for Enhancing Energy Security and Reducing Emissions in Indonesia”—in Sustainability (vol. 17, article 4681). Their study examines the impact of EV development on CO2 emissions, fossil fuel dependency, and cross-sectoral sustainability trade-offs in Indonesia. By considering the aforementioned factors, the team offers insights on integrated and effective policies recommendation to guide the national transition toward sustainable transportation.

The findings strongly support several key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). EV adoption directly supports SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) through greater reliance on domestically produced electricity; bolsters SDG 13 (Climate Action) by reducing transport-related emissions; and contributes to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting greener transportation systems. This research provides critical evidence for policymakers, industry leaders, and urban planners aiming to shape Indonesia’s sustainable mobility future—reinforcing how EVs can serve as a cornerstone in forging an energy-resilient and low-carbon economy.
