The Graduate School of Universitas Padjadjaran (SPS Unpad) is spearheading an innovative research project entitled “Decolonizing Urban Agriculture in Bandung for Climate Change Mitigation.” This initiative is led by Dr. Gemilang Lara Utama, Head of the Environmental Science Program, together with a team of multidisciplinary SPS lecturers.
The project is strategically aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by strengthening local food security through sustainable urban farming practices, and supports SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting more equitable and environmentally sound agricultural systems. In addition, the research highlights the public health dimension (SDG 3, Good Health and Well-Being) through improved access to nutritious food, while the “decolonizing” approach underscores SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by ensuring fair and inclusive access to urban agriculture for marginalized communities.
One of the distinctive strengths of this research lies in its multidisciplinary perspective—integrating environmental science, social equity, food systems, and climate resilience. By reimagining urban agriculture as a tool for both climate change mitigation and social justice, the study positions Bandung as a model city for sustainable and inclusive development.
Through this pioneering work, SPS Unpad reinforces its role as a leader in addressing global sustainability challenges with locally relevant and socially responsive solutions.
