Unpad Graduate School Unveils Zero-Waste Strategy for Sustainable Small-Scale Tourism at Udjo Ecoland

A new study led by Azmi Kautsar Alim, Mohamad Sapari Dwi Hadian, and Evi Novianti, all affiliated with the Graduate School, Universitas Padjadjaran, in collaboration with colleagues from Politeknik Negeri Bandung and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, presents an innovative framework for applying the zero-waste concept in small-scale tourism destinations. Focusing on Udjo Ecoland in Bandung Regency, West Java, the qualitative case study employed SWOT–TOWS matrix combined with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to examine current waste management practices and propose prioritized strategic interventions. The research reveals that while Udjo Ecoland’s strong values, integrated system design, and organic waste initiatives provide a solid foundation, challenges such as unaddressed inorganic waste, limited human resources, and communication barriers remain significant. The study identifies the most impactful strategies—including staff training and participation, environmental education and visitor awareness, and formal internal policies—to guide Udjo Ecoland toward a fully embedded zero-waste operation. Additional strategic recommendations include expanding partnerships, marketing sustainability-themed tours, and conducting further research on inorganic waste handling. These insights contribute directly to supporting Sustainable Development Goals such as SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by fostering sustainable tourism, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through waste minimization and circular processes, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) via reducing landfill emissions and promoting ecological resilience. As a replicable model for other small tourism destinations, this study highlights how community-driven, zero-waste practices can align cultural preservation with environmental stewardship and economic viability.
