International Workshop on Urban Agriculture Heritage Strengthens Pathways to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals

Bandung hosted the third workshop of the international collaboration Integrated Study on Urban Agriculture as Heritage (INSUAH), bringing together leading universities from Germany, Japan, Brazil, Cuba, and Indonesia through Universitas Padjadjaran. Organized by the Center for Environment and Sustainability Science (CESS) and the Graduate School, Universitas Padjadjaran, the workshop explored how cultural heritage and traditional urban agriculture practices contribute to sustainable food systems, resilient communities, and environmental stewardship.

Through interactive sessions, field visits, and collaborative activities, participants examined how home gardens and cassava-based farming traditions, such as those practiced by the Indigenous People of Cirendeu, can be preserved and adapted to modern challenges like land scarcity and population pressure. The simultaneous chili and onion planting program with the Bandung City Food Security and Agriculture Agency and Bank BJB further highlighted practical efforts to strengthen food security, reduce inflation, and promote urban farming innovations. By addressing these issues, INSUAH contributes directly to several Sustainable Development Goals, including Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Life on Land (SDG 15), ensuring that urban agriculture heritage remains a key driver of sustainability.
