Unpad, Graduate School researcher, Dr. Kevin Muhamad Lukman, contributed to a strategic review article titled “Blue Carbon Ecosystems in the Coral Triangle: A Perceptive Approach to Climate Adaptation,” published in the APN Science Bulletin journal in 2025. This article is a synthesis of nine studies within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) project focused on enhancing the capacity of local stakeholders in managing blue carbon (BC) ecosystems for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
This research confirms that blue carbon ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses, and coastal wetlands play a vital role in sequestering carbon and protecting coastal areas from the impacts of extreme climate change. However, the sustainability of these ecosystems currently faces dual pressures from human activities and natural vulnerabilities. This study highlights the state of ecosystem degradation as well as local community perceptions, from the context of socio-economic challenges in sustainable tourism management, and formulates research trends and policies for community-based coastal area management.
A particularly striking feature of this research is its approach, which holistically combines ecological and social dimensions. Key findings emphasize the importance of engaging local communities in conservation and the urgency of practical training, such as the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to enhance community capacity to independently monitor and manage marine ecosystems.
This study significantly contributes to SDGs 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Ocean Ecosystems), while strengthening SDGs 11 (Sustainable Communities) and 17 (Global Partnerships) through cross-border collaboration. This research also serves as an important reference for policymakers and conservation organizations in designing ecosystem-based adaptation plans that are inclusive of local community voices.
