SPs UNPAD Empowers First-Generation College Students: A Key Contributor to Sustainable Education

In a recent pre-sustainability survey conducted by Sekolah Pascasarjana Universitas Padjadjaran (SPs UNPAD), data revealed that 50% of the student respondents—37 out of 74—are the first in their families to attend higher education. This important finding highlights the critical role SPs UNPAD plays in increasing educational access and opportunities for diverse backgrounds, particularly for those from underrepresented communities.

By providing pathways for first-generation college students, SPs UNPAD demonstrates a commitment to fostering inclusive education in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4: Quality Education, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable education for all. This initiative also aligns with SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, as it supports students from various socio-economic backgrounds in pursuing higher education, helping to break cycles of inequality.

The school’s dedication to supporting first-generation students is also a reflection of the university’s alignment with the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, which evaluate universities based on their progress in implementing the SDGs. SPs UNPAD’s efforts resonate particularly with the indicator on providing equitable educational access, a key measure of social sustainability.

By actively contributing to these global goals, SPs UNPAD continues to empower students to become agents of change in their communities, demonstrating that sustainable development begins with educational empowerment. As these first-generation students break barriers in their pursuit of knowledge, they embody the spirit of resilience and innovation that is crucial for building a more inclusive and sustainable future.
