Graduate School UNPAD Launches Zero Waste Challenge to Promote Campus Waste Reduction and Recycling Initiatives

In its commitment to sustainability, the Graduate School of Universitas Padjadjaran (SPs UNPAD) has initiated a routine waste calculation and evaluation process, focusing on both organic and inorganic waste generated on campus. These calculations serve as a foundation for the design of policies aimed at reducing and managing waste more effectively. Students are actively involved through the “Zero Waste Challenge,” a competition encouraging innovative solutions for waste reduction and recycling within the campus community.

Through field observations in 2023, it was recorded that the organic waste generated from the SPs campus canteen reached 0.3795 tons, while inorganic waste amounted to 0.1265 tons for the same period. Additionally, a Pre-Sustainability survey revealed that each student, staff member, and leader at SPs contributed to a total waste generation of 155.342 tons annually, with an average of 0.2 kg of waste per person per day. This survey covered a population of 307 individuals, including students, staff, and administrators.

This data is crucial for shaping SPs UNPAD’s waste management strategies and is used to monitor the effectiveness of sustainability efforts. The initiative aligns with the guidelines outlined in Chapter 2 of the SPs sustainability framework, which focuses on waste reduction and recycling practices.

By engaging the entire academic community in collaborative efforts, SPs UNPAD strives to create a successful and sustainable waste management system that significantly reduces waste and enhances recycling efforts on campus.
