Collaborative Research on Environmental and Health Impacts: UNPAD’s Partnership with PT Kaltim Prima Coal

4 Mei 2023 — Universitas Padjadjaran’s Center for Environment and Sustainability Science (CESS) and the Environmental Science Program are collaborating with PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), a coal mining company in Kutai Timur, East Kalimantan. PT KPC holds an Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) document approved through the Environmental Feasibility Decree (SKKL) by the Regent of Kutai Timur with Decree Number 503/13/DPMPTSP-PPNP/SKKL/X2021.

Environmental Monitoring and Health Impact Assessment
According to the Environmental Monitoring Plan attached to SKKL, PT KPC is mandated to monitor potential impacts on public health and workers by conducting a Health and Environment Survey every five years. This survey covers communities within the mining operation areas spanning four districts. The objective is to identify environmental and health impacts resulting from mining operations systematically.

“The collaboration with PT KPC is pivotal in fulfilling environmental monitoring obligations and assessing community health impacts. This initiative not only supports regulatory compliance but also aims to establish strategic approaches for disease control, healthcare provision, and environmental health management.”

The research and survey activities conducted in partnership with PT KPC contribute significantly to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, focusing on ecosystem preservation and biodiversity. By monitoring environmental conditions and assessing health impacts, the collaboration aims to safeguard ecosystems and biodiversity affected by mining activities in East Kalimantan. This supports sustainable resource management and conservation efforts vital for biodiversity conservation.

Beyond regulatory requirements, the Health and Environment Survey underscores PT KPC’s commitment to environmental stewardship and public health. The survey results serve as foundational data to inform future community empowerment programs and sustainable development initiatives.
