The Sekolah Pascasarjana (SPs) at Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) is proud to be a key player in fostering educational opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds. Recent data from a pre-sustainability survey highlights that 50% of respondents, or 37 out of 74 postgraduate students, are the first in their families to attend university. This significant statistic underscores SPs UNPAD’s commitment to broadening access to higher education and empowering students who are first-generation college attendees. Among these first-generation students, 17 are women, further emphasizing SPs UNPAD’s commitment to broadening access to higher education and empowering underrepresented groups, particularly women in academia.
Empowering Through Education:
UNPAD Graduate School’s focus on inclusivity and accessibility is an embodiment of the university’s core values. By supporting first-generation students, SPs is helping to break down barriers and create a pathway for individuals who might not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue higher education. This approach not only enriches the university community but also contributes to societal advancement by nurturing a diverse body of educated professionals.
Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 4: Quality Education
By prioritizing the education of first-generation college students, SPs UNPAD actively contributes to SDG 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all. This initiative helps reduce inequalities and provides a strong foundation for lifelong learning opportunities.
SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
The commitment to enrolling and supporting first-generation students aligns with SDG 10, which focuses on reducing inequality within and among countries. By providing these students with access to higher education, SPs UNPAD plays a crucial role in promoting social mobility and equal opportunities.
Looking Forward:
The data reflects SPs UNPAD’s ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive academic environment. By encouraging applications from first-generation students and providing the necessary support for their academic success, SPs is helping to shape a more equitable future. As part of its strategic vision, the graduate school will continue to develop initiatives that align with the SDGs, ensuring that higher education remains a powerful tool for personal and community development.
Through these initiatives, UNPAD Graduate School not only addresses key indicators from the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings but also demonstrates a steadfast commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable academic community.
