Bandung, July 19, 2023 — BUAH (Bandung Urban Agriculture Heritage) The Living Lab, a pivotal component of the INSUAH (Integrated Study of Urban Agriculture Heritage), joins hands with five countries including Germany, Japan, Brazil, Cuba, and Indonesia. Established to identify and describe Bandung’s urban agricultural heritage, BUAH collaborates with local governments and stakeholders to heighten public awareness of urban heritage. Together, they strive to craft policies and urban planning practices that are more sustainable through a heritage perspective.
BUAH The Living Lab focuses on revitalizing heritage through several approaches: integrating traditional knowledge with modern farming techniques, boosting urban farmers’ income while mitigating climate impacts, implementing adaptive local wisdom, and restoring backyard functions with high biodiversity, mimicking forest ecosystems.
Adding to its significance, BUAH operates within a faculty area rich in forest vegetation akin to an arboretum. Here, biodiversity and carbon storage studies are conducted, encompassing flora census methods and diverse fauna assessments including birds and insects. Results indicate moderate biodiversity levels with flora diversity indices at 1.73 overall and 2.38 within BUAH’s demonstration plots. Fauna assessments reveal a moderate bird diversity index of 2.21 and a high insect diversity index of 3.50.
These efforts align closely with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 15 (Life on Land) which promotes the conservation and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. By preserving biodiversity and exploring carbon storage potentials, BUAH exemplifies a commitment to sustainable urban agriculture and environmental stewardship.
