Inspiring Collaboration: Faculty Initiates Urban Agriculture Heritage Program to Support SDGs

July 31, 2023

Six months ago, a pivotal meeting with Kang @ch_fajri and Kang @pemuda_mandiri004 set the stage for a groundbreaking initiative. This discussion revolved around enhancing the activities of the group @pemuda_mandiri_, connecting through events hosted by @buruansaebdg and @dkpp.bandung. The objective was to collaboratively implement the visionary ideas from the Living Lab’s research, “Integrated Study on Urban Agriculture Heritage (INSUAH)” led by Prof. Oekan S. Abdoellah, Ph.D.

The program has since evolved, focusing on integrating heritage into urban agriculture. This initiative addresses key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by fostering climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, promoting household food security, and ensuring sustainability.

Connecting Heritage and Urban Agriculture

Under the leadership of Prof. Oekan S. Abdoellah, the INSUAH research aims to preserve agricultural heritage within urban settings. This approach not only honors traditional practices but also incorporates them into modern urban agriculture, creating a unique blend of past and present.

Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

One of the program’s core objectives is to adapt to and mitigate climate change. By implementing heritage-based agricultural practices, the initiative contributes to SDG 13 (Climate Action). These practices are designed to be resilient to climate impacts, thus ensuring the sustainability of urban food systems.

Promoting Household Food Security

The program also aligns with SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by enhancing household food security. By empowering communities with the knowledge and resources to grow their own food, the initiative helps reduce food insecurity and promotes self-sufficiency.

Ensuring Sustainability

Sustainability is a central theme of the program, corresponding with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). The integration of heritage into urban agriculture promotes sustainable urban development, ensuring that cities can meet the needs of their present and future inhabitants.

Looking Forward

The faculty of Sekolah Pasca Sarjana is committed to furthering these efforts, continuously developing programs and activities that integrate heritage into urban agriculture. This ongoing initiative not only addresses immediate challenges but also lays the groundwork for a resilient and sustainable future.

Through these efforts, the faculty is making significant strides in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, demonstrating the vital role of education and research in driving societal progress. (SNM)
