November 10, 2023 — Today marked an extraordinary journey as we hiked barefoot through the Baladahan Forest in Kampung Adat Cirendeu. It was a fascinating experience identifying and celebrating the Urban Agricultural Heritage preserved by the local indigenous community. For generations, the shifting cultivation system and intercropping of cassava, peanuts, corn, and mung beans have ensured food security for the local population. The transition from rice to cassava as a staple food, sustained for over a century, showcases the community’s resilience against climate change. Moreover, the philosophy of ‘kesundaan’ (deference) underpins their daily lives, embodying sustainability in its truest form.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, emphasizing the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage through community activities. The activities conducted today implicitly address indicators related to sustainable urbanization, cultural diversity, and heritage conservation. Specifically, SDG 11.4 (strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage) resonates strongly with our efforts in Kampung Adat Cirendeu.
Stay tuned as we continue to explore and celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of urban agriculture, guided by principles of sustainability and community resilience. (SNM)
