Graduate competencies are expected to have the following competencies:

  • Able to Design and Design research proposals as well as carry out biotechnology research to increase production and quality of environmentally friendly biological products (plants, livestock and fish).
  • Able to develop design medicine and rapid detection of disease by utilizing local resources.
  • Able to apply knowledge of biotechnology in improving bioprocesses and efficiency in the field of biotechnology.
  • Able to combine various environmentally friendly biological processes in overcoming industrial waste problems.

History

Indonesia, which is a tropical country with a large population, has its own implications in the fields of health, food and the environment. On the other hand, the abundant diversity of natural resources has not been widely utilized to help overcome the problems mentioned above. For this reason, the Biotechnology Study Program under the Unpad Graduate School focuses on developing innovations in the biotechnology industry through interdisciplinary research by utilizing molecular, genetic and biochemical aspects in producing new products that are more useful for human life.

Biotechnology Study Program Curriculum

The Unpad Biotechnology Study Program aims to produce graduates who are professional and competent in:

  • Determine and design and carry out research and analysis and interpretation of data/big data according to the study.
  • Drug development by utilizing local resources.
  • Development of rapid detection of tropical infectious diseases and cancer as well as diseases originating from other countries.
  • Designing and conducting research to increase the production and quality of local agricultural products (plants, livestock and fish) through genetic engineering.
  • Apply biotechnology knowledge to improve bioprocessing and efficiency in the bioindustry.
  • Solving industrial waste problems including reclamation of ex-mining land through various environmentally friendly biological processes.

The curriculum of the Biotechnology Study Program is designed and implemented continuously by a curriculum team that refers to international standards by involving existing stakeholders. Students will be given in-depth knowledge and skills in science and biotechnology applications according to their interests and study materials. In addition, students will also be given a choice of knowledge and skills in terms of:

  • Ethics (bioethics) and biosafety (biosafety)
  • Techno-economics and legal aspects of biotechnology products
  • Disease detection methods and drug design
  • Signaling technology and Molecular marker technology
  • Genetic engineering techniques of plants, animals and fish
  • Bioinformatics, Bioprocess and Product Downstreaming
  • Bio Industry, Preservation and encapsulation technology
  • Bioremediation and Phytoremediation Technology
  • Instrumentation, computer applications and biostatistics

Learning methods

Learning innovations continue to be developed in the Study Program using a blended learning method that is fully based on on-line courses and distance learning combined with an assessment system in collaboration with learning partners. This is done to adapt to the current conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as to make it easier for students to follow learning and learning styles that are different for everyone. The Biotechnology Study Program also offers various training modules that are integrated with existing competency certifications at Padjadjaran University.

Research Focus

Research in the Biotechnology Study Program will focus on innovative research in the Biotechnology industry in four research topics according to students’ interests. These four research topics are the main research agenda of the lecturers in the Biotechnology Study Program.

In the health sector, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, the focus of the study is mainly on drug development by utilizing local resources and developing rapid detection of tropical infectious diseases and cancer as well as diseases originating from other countries.
Focus on agriculture and food (agro-biotechnology).

Master of Biotechnology Study Program

The Masters Program will be pursued for 2 years with a focus on skills in determining problem-solving with a multidisciplinary approach and designing and conducting biotechnology research according to current interests and problems. Students will be given in-depth knowledge of biotechnology principles, and scientific methodology in the field of biotechnology, to comprehensively analyze data from biotechnology research and its application in depth in the fields of health, agro-biotechnology, bioindustry and the environment.

The Master of Biotechnology Program offers four studies related to specifications with research interests: i) Health Biotechnology, ii) Agro-biotechnology, iii) Industrial biotechnology, and iv) Environmental biotechnology. Studies related to research topics are designed to provide certain specializations. Students must complete all courses in the chosen interest. Students can develop their knowledge by taking courses from other interests according to the study and needs of the research topic.

The Biotechnology study program curriculum provides a cross-platform approach that allows students to acquire unique skills that are attractive to various companies. Students will also be trained in problem-solving, project management and communication skills in the field of biotechnology. In the final semester, you will be given an assignment in the form of a research project with topics that are relevant to current issues that can be collaborated with other universities/research institutions anywhere in the world which are collaborative partners of the Unpad Biotech Study Program.

Biotechnology Doctoral Study Program

The Biotechnology Doctoral Study Program at Gradschool Unpad is a three-year by research Doctoral program based on trans and interdisciplinary research with a focus on the philosophy and professional development of biotechnology scientists in four areas of specialization:

  1. Health biotechnology
  2. Plant, livestock and fish biotechnology (agro-biotechnology)
  3. Industrial biotechnology
  4. Environmental biotechnology

Students of the Biotechnology Doctoral Program will focus on conducting research in an effort to solve real problems by using all knowledge and theory and applying aspects of biotechnology. Students will be guided by lecturers who are experienced and have a reputation for excellence in Biotechnology research.
